Jerry Davenport

As we close out this year, I wanted to post Jerry Davenport’s post on his Christmas memories.  He has presented a great article on looking back and looking forward.  Enjoy this and give it much thought.

Brother Jerry is a graduate of Criswell College and also a West Texas rancher.  He told me that being a rancher does not mean he has bunches of money, it just means he has the capacity to lose bunches of money.  Brother Jerry also told me that his ranch is merely the object that God uses to allow him to take mission teams into Mexico. Jerry is a very effective missionary to Mexico and is being used by God to establish a mission plan for that area.  When many people are talking about evangelizing the dangerous territory of Mexico, Brother Jerry is doing it.   It was a mission trip to Mexico where Jerry and I met.  Brother Jerry heads up The River Ministry, a ministry where he coordinates mission trips into Mexico.  He is also an active member of Mother Holmes Memorial Baptist Church in Sheffield, Texas.  Jerry produces an article for the local papers in his area and he agreed to send them to me also.

Looking back; Looking forward

I had a chance to find a quiet time to think and reflect this Christmas. I tried to review this year and some of the it’s events. In many ways last year was good because we had very little sickness and several times our family was able to get together. Many of our family moved closer to God and we also have a new grandson. On the other hand we had one of the most severe droughts since the 1950′s and we also had some close friends pass away. We saw much unrest and turmoil on our country and where Christian values and beliefs are being shunned or shut out. We are also seeing where the numbers are growing where people do not believe in God. We constantly hear “Peace Peace” but where is the peace with more and more wars and killings. There is also a large worldwide movement where millions and millions say they love God but they deny Jesus Christ and are killing many that believe in Him and they think they are doing God a favor, (John 15:18-23& 16:1-4)). Guess what, these things were predicted over 2000 years ago and it is going to get worse but God will take care of those trusting in Christ, (John 17:22& 16:33). He has wonderful plans for us and a wonderful future, (Jeremiah 29:11, 2 Timothy 4:8&18). See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Do Not Forget to Water the Trees

After a brief hiatus Brother Jerry has returned and with a great thought for us to meditate on this morning.  He relates how trees and our spiritual condition are related.  Read and enjoy.

Do Not Forget to Water the Trees

My wife has been up visiting and helping my son and daughter-in -law with their new baby. She reminded me to water the trees and I agreed. Earlier I visited with a county agent and we talked about trees and especially pecan trees as I was concerned abut the three in our yard. He said if it does not rain very much that I needed to try and get some water on them and he even suggested putting some fertilizer on them. He went on to say that if it rains this winter and if the trees are fertilized they will recover faster, be a lot healthier and produce more next spring. In thinking about those trees I am reminded about something in the Bible. It talks a lot abut trees, water and even fertilizer, (Luke 13:8). Trees are one thing but what about us, can we be stressed or in a spiritual drought? We can but there are some things we can do that will help. God’s Word, the Bible can be nourishment to our souls and like water on parched land. It can refresh us, strengthen us or help us endure hardships, (Psalm 1:3, Philippians 2:16-18).Let us be like those trees that yearn those slow soaking rains. Let us soak in God’s word. It can bring new life, refreshment and healing to our souls, (Job 5:8-11, Psalm 1:1-3). See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Today Brother Jerry tells us about a local accountability group and how they that time of fellowship.  This meeting time inspired Jerry to think about how and when God meets with man.

The Meeting Place

A good friend of mine is a retired seminary professor used to get together with some friends weekly to have a fellowship meal and talk. They met at a local Mexican restaurant and one of the topics of discussion was the things of God. I have attended one of those fellowship meals and enjoyed the discussions. Thinking about their weekly meetings reminded me of something in the Bible. How and when does God meet with man. God met and talked to Adam and then Eve, (Genesis 3:8-13) and later on He met with different men and women. Eventually He chose special people, Moses, others and the Angel of the Lord to communicate His words or commands, (Genesis 22:11&12, Exodus 3:4-6). Not only did God want particularly chosen people to speak for Him but he wanted a special place that He could meet with people. God had His people construct a very special tent or tabernacle for a meeting place, (Hebrews 8:5). God would be there and speak to the people, (Exodus 29:42, 33:7). Now God meets with people in other places and He can meet and communicate with us anywhere, anytime. But God also meets with people who seek Him in groups and it can be as few as two or three, (Matthew 18:20). One very special way God has chosen to meet with us is through Jesus Christ, (Hebrews 9:11&12). See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Brother Jerry Davenport brings us more great insight into our spiritual life.  What an encouraging article for making certain the grass in our life isn’t overrun by the weeds of life.  Enjoy.

Bushhoging

Most people do not know what it means unless you live in farming and ranching country. It is where farmers or ranchers mow their pastures so that weeds don’t grow up and choke the life out of the grass. It is usually done in the spring, summer and fall. I noticed a pasture last week before and after mowing and what a difference. Left unattended the weeds will eventually kill the grass. Seeing those tall weeds and the short grass reminded me of something in the Bible. It talks a lot about a conflict between two forces, the flesh and the spirit. We are born with the flesh but we do not receive the Spirit of God permently or indwelt with, until we are born again and that happens when we receive Christ, (John 3:3, 2 Peter 1:4, 2 Corinthians 5:17). If we recieve Christ those two natures will always be in conflict with each other, (Romans 8:5-11). The flesh does not want to submit to God, and the Holy Spirit will not abide in the presence of abundance of sin, (Galations 5:16–21, Ephesians 4:22-24). We can chose which one we want to thrive, the Holy Spirit or the flesh. The spirit life has a lot more joy and peace, (Galations 5:22-25). See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Today Brother Jerry Davenport relates a funny real life story to our spiritual armor as a Christian.  Enjoy.

Hard Hats and Helmets

One summer years ago I worked on a pulling unit in the oilfield. I worked with a man that liked to visit the local beerjoint every evening. One problem he had was his wife and mother-law did not like him to drink. When he came home he would be drunk and it made his wife mad. She would wait for him at the door with a broom. She would wack him on the head with the broom. I asked him one day, ” why don’t you put your hard hat on when you go in the house?” He tried that but it did not work. When she saw him she turned the broom around and punched him in the stomach with the handle. He doudbled over and the hat fell off and she then really started whacking him with the broom. He was mad at me a long time for mentioning the idea. I am reminded that the Bible talks abut helmets. They were a defensive weapon and were usually made of brass or bronze. In, (1 Samuel 17:5, 2 Chronicles 26:14, Jeremiah 46:4) Goliath had a bronze helmet also King Saul gave David his bronze helmet, (1Samuel 17:38). The Bible also talks about a helmet of salvation, (Isaiah 59:17, Ephesians 6:17). for those who hve accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior there is hope and a promise of being in heaven, (1 Thessalonians 5:8-11). See you in church next Sunday. Brother J

Returning from a computer crash, I am back on the schedule.  Still trying to find some of my recovered documents.  However, it seems I am now able to return to some type of normalcy.  In Brother Jerry Davenport’s article today we are reminded the difference of  the “Old School” not being all that bad for us.

New School, Old School
Recently I was talking to a young woman in her 20’s and I asked her about her relationship to Jesus Christ. She had accepted Him at the age of nine. I asked her if she was married because she had a ring on her hand. She was not but she was living with her boyfriend  to see if it was going to work out. I asked her if she went to Church and she said, “no”.  I also asked her if she read the Bible and she said, “no”.  I went on to ask where in the Bible did God approve of us just living together and not getting married. She went on to say, “Oh that stuff is old school about keeping yourself pure till marriage”. She then said to me, “ We are new school and we do things differently”. I wondered what God’s word said about this new school stuff.  First of all Gods principles and laws never change, (Luke 21:33). Second’ we are accountable as to how we obey them, (Psalm 50:16, Proverbs 2:1-22, Proverbs 4:4). God expects us to learn and know His word, the Bible, and to obey it, (Luke 6:46, John 14:23&24). As we move closer to the end times more will fall away and say they are Christians but are really not, (2 Timothy 3:1-5). As for me I think I will stay in the old school. See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Saturday Citations–Two Widows

Brother Jerry Davenport

In this installment of Saturday Citations Brother Jerry reminds us of our Biblical instructions concerning Widows.

Two Widows

Recently we have lost two close friends to cancer. One has been suffering for years and the other did not suffer very long. Because we were close their passing was a loss for their spouces and for us also. My wife has been talking to and visiting their wives, and they have even been in our house trying to find the strength to go on after such a great loss. One thing I noticed is many times we do not think about the future or how things will just work out for our family or loved ones left behind. I have had to do funerals where no plans were made and there was much confusion. It even made greater suffering for the family. The Bible talks about widows and we are not to take advantage or oppress them in any way, (Zechariah 7:10, Malachi 3:5). We are also to honor them, (1 Timothy 5:3-5). Husbands are to love their wives and care for them, (Ephesians 5:28). Husbands should try and see that their wives are taken care of if something were to happen to them, (1 Peter 3:7). Yes children and even grandchildren are to help provide for them if they have no means of support, (1 Timothy 5:4). Couples should keep each other informed and have things planned out if something were to happen. It is sad to see widows left destitute or with no idea about their affairs. See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Brother Jerry confronts us with sage wisdom from a time of watching the tedious work of his mother-in-law.  Great words of wisdom concerning sin.

Digging  Out Grass Burrs

Years ago when my wife and I were newly weds we would visit my mother-in-law quite frequently. One reason, she was a good cook and she usually had homemade bread or cinnamon roll, (my favorite) and we usually managed to arrive around mealtime. One thing I  remember was that she had a grass burr problem in part of her yard. She would water the ground to make it soft and then go outside with small stool to sit on and take a funny looking little rod with a small prong on the end and very carefully dig up each grass burr plant one by one. When she first started there were a lot of grass burrs but in several years there were almost none. My mother-in-law getting rid of those grass burrs reminds me of something in the Bible. A problem that we all face is sin, (Romans 3:23). It is not a matter of if, but what do we do about it. Many try to ignore or deny it, while other think it is no big deal, (1 John 1:8). If we have not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior our sin condemns us to death or eternal separation from God, (Romans 6:23& 7:11). If we are Christians, sin hinders our fellowship with God, (Ephesians 4:30, 1 Thessalonians 5:19). The solution is to admit, acknowledge, confess our sin and disobedience to God and ask forgiveness, (1 John 1:9). See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J

Jerry Davenport has presented another thought provoking, self-assessing article for our consideration.  We would all do well to heed the application within our own lives.

The Color of Skin

Last week while traveling I decided to stop in at a little hamburger stand to cool off and get a coke. While sitting there a family came in that was of a different race. They were nicely dressed and the three small children with them were well behaved. They sat down at the table next to mine so I struck up a conservation with them and it was amazing all the things we had in common. For instance we were about the same age and they were traveling with their grandkids. It was humorous to watch them because it was just like my wife and I with our grandkids. Seeing that family reminded me of something in the Bible. We have to be very careful that we do not reject or shun away from people because they are different. It could be anything like religion, education, dress, race, nationality, language and the list is unlimited. Jesus Christ set the example of crossing barriers for us and we are to follow it, (1 Peter 2:22). Jesus crossed barriers like poverty, sickness, (John 5:5-9) contagious diseases, (Matthew 8:2-4), wealth, (John 4:46-54), The Samaritan woman, a outcast because of race and sin, (John 4:4-29), and even Peter’s mother in law, (Matthew 8:14&15). We need to watch out how we accept or reject others because God may just treat us the same way, (Matthew 7:1&2). See you in Church next Sunday. Brother J
