Southern Baptist in NC

Keeping Christ central in the world of Southern Baptists

Just when one believes the Calvinist-Arminian Debate is over due to nausea induced arguments, along comes a voice of reason.  In the latest White Paper signed by Dr. Paige Patterson, Dr. David Allen, Dr. Malcolm Yarnell, Dr. Ken Keathley, Dr. Jerry Vines, Dr. Richard Land, and Dr. Steve Lemke, we have a Baptist position expressed by Baptist Theologians.  The point that appeals to this writer centers around the fact of who we are.  Whenever we modify Baptist with either Calvinist or Arminian we just left the central tenant of being a  Baptist-the Bible.  The authors of the White Paper certainly express this truth when they write;

As mission-minded and evangelistic Baptists, we are uncomfortable with moving too far beyond scriptural revelation into speculative theological models.

Dr. Vines referred to “simple biblicism” as the place we should remain with the debate.  With this in mind the White Paper reminds us there is an understanding that we have Calvinist Baptists along with Arminian Baptists within the SBC.  But, as the authors expressed:

We certainly believe that Baptists can be Calvinists and they can be Arminians, but we prefer not to allow ourselves to be defined by either of those great positions, because we see something even greater, something that deserves more attention and requires a higher allegiance. Likewise, theologians open to Molinism, such as Bruce Little and Ken Keathley, do their work with a firm commitment to evangelical Baptist convictions. What we are saying is that our own passion for God’s Word, for Christ and for His Great Commission necessarily places every desire for settling the long-running and seemingly intractable Calvinist-Arminian debate to the side. We recognize this is a debate that will continue to be held and should be held in certain restricted venues. However, the debate itself is trumped by our need to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, to proclaim Scripture, and to obey His Great Commission. Moreover, we believe our position is the mainstream Southern Baptist position, as Richard Land said in his chapter, “the Separate Baptist Sandy Creek Tradition has been the melody for Southern Baptists, with Charleston and other traditions providing harmony” (50).

This article brings us back to the central tenet that is needed in this debate.

How Texans Build Biblical Bridges

The first Church started in Texas was began by Daniel Parker a two seed theologian.

The association reorganized with REB Baylor leading the way.

Defining Calvinism

Lack of clarity. Three fold paradigm

Classical Calvinism

Numerous attempts to codify Calvinism. After the Synod Dort Calvinism split into Arminius and Calvinism.

Classical Calvinism has a positive and negative view of election.

Servetus was murdered by Calvin and his followers.

Baptist Calvinism

Particular Baptist are 2-3 decades behind the General Baptist. English Baptist rejected predestination as reprehensible.

These Baptist explicitly rejected the theological method and moved away from the Calvinist context. Not all modern Baptist agree on what part of Calvin should be retained and which should be rejected.

Appreciation and distrust of Calvinism. Calvinist take the Biblical text seriously as well as Baptist, but Baptist more so.

Hyper Calvinism

Causes for Rejoicing and Concern of Calvinism

  • Jesus Christ

If there is on thing that characterizes Baptist believe at the folk level, and our best theologians, it is the centrality of faith in the Savior and submission to Him as Lord. There is a standing temptation for Baptit enamored with Reformed Theology to transition from concentrating on faith in Christ toward rationalistic doctrines of predestination.

  • The Bible

Both Baptist and Calvinists have a high appreciation for the Bible. Non-calvinist Baptist rejoice in the stands that our Calvinist Brothers on the inerrancy of the Scripture. Calvinism is not so interested in the Bible as much as it is in a system that the Bible is stretched to

  • The Gospel

Spurgeon proclaimed the Gospel regularly. The cause of concern is the Classical Calvinism of the new birth. The distinction of “common grace in the common call” and “special grace in the effectual call.” This is not found in Scripture.

  • The Churches

The renewed focus on ecclesiology. There is no room for the lost of congregationalism. History of Baptist Churches comes through Calvinist Historians. It seems that the only historical Baptist Churches are Calvinist.

  • The Christian Life

The emphasis on preaching the Gospel clearly. Protest against the altar call is something for concern. Personal integrity is something that is to be celebrated.

Conclusion

BH Carroll was a Calvinist in line with the moderate tone of the New Hampshire Confession. The Tesas tradition indicates that Classical Calvinism and Hyper-Calvinism should feel distinctly unwelcome, for it expects personal faith and repentance from preaching.

We non-Calvinist Baptist call on our Calvinsit Baptist Brothers to identify and call forth and reject the errors of Classical Calvinism and Hyper-Calvinism.

What Kind of Sunday did you Have?

We had a great day at Yadkin Baptist.  We did not have anyone come forward for salvation neither did we have anyone come to the altar for prayer.  The morning message was scintillating and the speaker was erudite in his presentation.  The content of the message was theologically stimulating and the delivery was warm and passionate.  Who was this preaching machine?  Notice the picture below.

Dr Yarnell went through Romans 10 and presented the truth of God’s Word from God’s Word.  What a blessing it is to have a person that is erudite  but can preach to people the simple Gospel.

This afternoon I received a phone call from an old friend.  Can you believe that I still have friends?  Can you believe that I have friends that do not mind saying they are my friends?  Well, look below and you will see my friends that came to visit me and was there for the evening service.

Brother CB gave his testimony tonight and the people truly responded to his testimony.  Brother Bob led in our evening men’s prayer altar and certainly one knew that we were in the presence of God. Brother Bob left his pink hat in the car, but that was okay because I had my pink shirt to accommodate.

What a great day.  I do look forward to being with these and others this week at the Building Bridges Conference at Ridgecrest.  If you are there look me up and introduce yourself to me, I would love meeting you in person.
