Southern Baptist in NC

Keeping Christ central in the world of Southern Baptists

In a recent New York Times article the journalist offered a solution to people not being hired because of some physical flaw in their appearance:

A more radical solution may be needed: why not offer legal protections to the ugly, as we do with racial, ethnic and religious minorities, women and handicapped individuals?

Legal protections for people who are “looked over” because they are hard to “look at”.  Or, as we would say in the backwoods of North Carolina, “Bless his/her heart!! He/She is so ugly their mama tied a pork chop around their neck to get the dog to play with them”.  Now, if I understand the law (I have contacted my legal counsel but have not heard back from him.  Thus, I contacted 1-800-Get-Lawyer and am eagerly awaiting one of these 5 lawyers to reply.) concerning discrimination two things must be proven.  First, it must be proven that you were discriminated against.  If that cannot be proven then the next step is null and void. If one can prove discrimination then one has to prove they are ugly.

With that test case scenario, I thought I would contemplate who I could sue.  You see, I pass the ugly part very easily.  Any judge with enough vision to see how to open a door can see I am ugly.  Now to prove I was discriminated against.

SBC Voices does not link to any of my articles on my blog.  Thus, I believe Dave Miller and the gang are discriminating against me because I am ugly.  SBC Today certainly does not discriminate against me as they are beginning to place pictures beside the posts. Praisegod Barebones has not commented nor linked to one of my posts lately.  It has to be due to the fact I am ugly. Brad Whitt just does not compliment me any longer and doesn’t comment on my blog.  I know he thinks I am ugly, he has told me as much.  The boys over at the SEBTS blog do not link to my posts.  I wonder if they think I must be ugly.

Peter Lumpkins claims that he cannot log onto my website.  I believe he is discriminating against me because I am ugly.  He certainly can get here if he wants but he chooses not to be associated with me because I am ugly. Howell Scott, and I must be careful how I speak about my legal counsel, has not visited my site to log a comment in a long while.  He must be discriminating against me because I am ugly.  I know it is because he comments everywhere else.  Shoot, he even has a post over at SBC Voices.  They even second-run his articles.  It is the same with William Thornton.  He also must be discriminating against me because I am ugly.  But, William may be too busy checking the salaries of pastors to care if I am ugly or not.  That brings about another thought. Maybe William can check the salaries of ugly pastors versus good looking pastors.  Better yet, maybe he could check the good looking denomination leaders versus the ugly denominational leaders.

This has been fun, but before you laugh too loud and long.  Consider this.

We actually already do offer such protections in a few places, including in some jurisdictions in California, and in the District of Columbia, where discriminatory treatment based on looks in hiring, promotions, housing and other areas is prohibited.

I am waiting for the Equal Opportunity Program for Ugly People to be put in place.  That way I can then apply for a denomination position and if I get turned down, I will have a case because I am ugly.

It is the last part of 2010 and I am logging off until after the first of 2011.  I plan to try and post two posts per week in 2011.  I am looking forward to seeing what God will do in the new year.  Until then, if you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping maybe this video will inspire you with a gift idea.

A Conference That Helps

Like most Pastors I have to choose carefully which conferences earn my time.  Some conferences are nothing more than a mere get together for a whoop and holler and go back pumped.  That pumped feeling wears off usually within a day of returning.  Why?  Most of the time something happens to burst your bubble when you get home.  A deacon will call you an say something like; “while you were out of town we received information that Sister Bertha better than you, was offended by something that you said in the message.”  Or you get a visit from a precious church member that reminds you of something you said 3 years earlier that was offensive and he/she were leaving the church and “just wanted you to be aware”.  The conference was just as well not attended and you are now wondering how in the world those at the conference could make statements like; “I hire my own staff”, or “I do not visit in hospitals”, or even better than those two, “I don’t have anyone on my staff that is not my friend.”

What I appreciate about Dr. Vines conference is that people will be on hand to discuss the issues one may meet.  Problems come and those who are in the trenches are the ones that can tell you what to expect and how to overcome them.  Well, I am registered for the upcoming conference and I encourage those who are looking for hands on practicums to sign-up and be there.

In case you missed it I want to direct your attention to my friend Peter Lumpkins blog.  He began a six part series on the Security of the Believer that is entitled: Why Your Faith Is Secure. Of course Brother Peter is only re-posting this series that was originally authored by Dr. Steve Lemke, Provost at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.  The original series appeared in the [Louisiana] Baptist Message. I encourage you to take a gander at this series as it delivers great insight and encourages believers.  While I am a little late to the party, one can find Part 1 here.

Pray for Brother Johnny Hunt and Ms. Janet

What an impact in my life I experienced from being around Dr. Johnny Hunt in 1988.  It was in a tent revival that he led that God called me into the ministry.  Brother Johnny Hunt has been used by God to impact my life and ministry from day one as a new Christian and new pastor.  I remember attending the 1992 SBC Convention in Atlanta Georgia.  It was in that convention that I attended the first SEBTS Alumni luncheon and sat with Brother Jim Law and Brother Johnny.  Brother Johnny brought a substitute motion for national Alumni President and I stood side-by-side with Brother Johnny.  Today, I once again stand side-by-side with him.  I am praying for Brother Johnny as he and Ms. Janet work out whatever has been thrown at them.

You can go to this link and see the announcement of Brother Jim Law as he explains, around the 25 minute mark, the situation to the church body at FBC Woodstock.

The Late Dr. Avery Willis

Dr. Avery Willis

What Southern Baptist Pastor worth their salt has not gone through the MasterLife courses that were authored by Dr. Avery Willis?  His Disciples Cross revolutionized my life and certainly the life of many who took that initial course.

While I was in Mexico on a mission trip, I received word that Dr. Avery Willis lost his battle with cancer and was ushered into the presence of God by the angels.  What a loss for Southern Baptists.  There are a number of articles expressing his accomplishments and Southern Baptist condolences.  I post this article as an announcement and a tribute to one that cast a vision for Southern Baptist concerning the “make disciples” portion of the Great Commission.

Brad Reynolds & FamilyTruett-McConnell College, Cleveland, GA, announces the appointment of Dr. Bradley Doyle Reynolds as Vice President for Academic Services.  He will assume responsibilities for the academic program of the college on July 1, 2009, and will make his home in Cleveland, GA.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Reynolds says: “I am extremely excited to be joining Truett-McConnell College.  We live in a world of uncertainty and confusion; however, I expect TMC under the leadership of Dr. Caner to chart the course in training the next generation of Christian leaders.  I am both honored and humbled to be a part of what God is already doing here.  May God bless us as we seek to honor Him.”

Dr. Reynolds holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the College of William and Mary, with an emphasis in education, specifically centered on policy, planning and leadership.  His dissertation is entitled The Current Status of the Creation/Evolution Debate in Public Schools.  In addition, he holds a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with an emphasis in languages.

He is married to the former April Davis; the couple has two children, Kelton Isaiah and Laith Isaac.

Currently Assistant Professor of Education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he has taught since 2003, Dr. Reynolds also serves as senior pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Youngsville, NC.  At Truett-McConnell he will be replacing Dr. Mike Simoneaux, Vice President for Academic Services since 2003 and former interim president.  Dr. Simoneaux will become Vice President for Advancement Services beginning July 1, 2009.

Truett-McConnell College is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention, offering both bachelor’s and associate’s degrees in a variety of majors and programs of study.

TMC president Dr. Emir Caner commented: “Dr. Reynolds personifies the rare blend of a pastor’s heart with an academician’s mind.  His prowess will allow Truett-McConnell College to take the next crucial step toward fulfilling its vision of being an institution that honors, without reservation, academic excellence and Biblical integrity.  How grateful we are that the Lord chose to bring Dr. Reynolds to us.”

The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Music.  Dr. Emir Caner became president of the college in August 2008.  The motto of Truett-McConnell is “Biblically Centered – Distinctively Baptist.”
